Edgil Pagaduan - Interview

June 26th, 2008 · No Comments · Art Reviews

At just 17 years of age, Australian native; Edgil Pagaduan is not only a self taught and self accomplished Illustrator and Graphic Designer, but is also in many ways a heroic inspiration to youth. Although admittedly Edgil confesses to not being any different from most other teenagers his own age; obsessed with girls, fashion and music etc, there is another side to the self proclaimed “shy” kid that goes unnoticed by day. One that harbors within his darkly creative soul. Only to be seen breaking through the surface in a brain storm of mayhem with an explosive anatomy of colour. Being of Asian heritage, shades of Edgil’s Manga forefathers can undoubtedly be seen in his work. But the point that really needs to be stressed is that Edgil hasn’t had any torch passed down to him, from one generation to the next. He’s ignited a new flame for his own.

Ed took some time out to give an exclusive interview to The 405. Enjoy.

When did you first realize that illustrating could become a full time career for yourself?

I first started realizing that illustrating could be my full time career around 2 years ago, when a local band called knife to a gunfight asked me for a design, i never knew i would get where i am today.

Where or from whom, do your ideas and inspirations for designs derive from?

Im definitely inspired by a number of artists style-wise, for example im very much influenced by chad lenjer, dan mumford and jimiyo, but with all my ideas and such, they basically pop in my head out of nowhere or it comes from my best friend kivins head, he has some of the most insane ideas in that redhaired head of his its amazing, alot of my more unique and weird pieces were actually some ideas hes thrown at me.

You have a really unique style of drawing with a great deal of detail. Has this always been the case or has your style been influenced? Anime etc

Ive only been drawing in this style for 1 year or so, before that i was a diehard designer with no linework in my designs whatsoever, but then i came around the likes of chad lenjer and dan mumford and was really inspired to try out the illustration style, and since then, i have been doing what i have been doing.

What have you been listening to a lot of recently on your iPod?

Lately is has been a mix, ive always been a soft kind of guy, so if oyu ever take the earphones out of my ears its probably city and colour, but lately ive been listening to alot of diverse stuff from all different genres, some bands ive been listening to are liferuiner, endwell, furious styles, fallout boy, boys like girls and missy higgins.

What’s been your biggest achievement this far?

I reckon it would have to be getting to where i am now, i never expected to get where i am, but i sure am grateful.

You’ve also done some really awesome and original tattoo designs. Have you ever thought about swapping pen and paper for ink and needle?

All the time all the time, i once actually dropped designing and did tattoo flashes for so long, but i got really bored of the whole tattoo style, dont get me wrong i love it, but it gets really repetitive, but i think in about a few months or so, ill be doing alot more tattoo work with a mix of my current style of illustrations which i hope will turn out really well.

Have you ever considered doing your own comic book or working as a comic book illustrator?

To be honest, i would love to do a comic book, but i have a MASSIVE problem drawing the same thing twice haha, so i dont think i will be anytime in the future, though i probably will do some comic book covers.

You’ve done work for the likes of The Plain White T’s, Senses Fail and All American Rejects, but If you could design for any band(or artists or for that matter any thing that would need designing for) past or present, who/what would it be and why?

It would definitely have to be city and colour, i would do a absolutely nutter design for him, it would be a kid in a chicken suit, flying around a city dropping massive buckets of rainbow paint on the buildings, city and colour would definitely have to be my favourite artist/band.

What is the key to keeping your work fresh and not getting mentally/physically burnt out with what you do?

Friends, just taking a break and going out with friends does so much, ive been burnt out and exhausted way too many times and i still am constantly, so when i am i call up a group of friends and we all go hang out and have a good old skate.

Finally, where do you see yourself 5 years from now, in regards to your work, new projects and any other personal aspirations you have in life.

In 5 years? probably still doing what im doing now, if not that then probably a tattoo artist.
