Welcome to the second of hopefully many of my weekly posts, This week I’ve been looking into Weezer, Tropic Thunder, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and the TV series The Family

After rediscovering my love for good old nerd rock outfit Weezer, I got my hands onto a copy of their new r

elease ‘Weezer - The Red Album‘ and true to form I loved it. ‘Pork and Beans‘ is definitely up there with my favourite music videos of all time but thats not all thats good about the song, the lyrics are classic weezer ‘i’m-a-nerd-and-i-dont-care-what-you-think’ two fingers up style. ‘Troublemaker‘ follows this kind of attitude, with a slice of humour in the mix. ‘Heart Songs‘ Is an insight into Rivers Cuomo’s personal life as he allows listeners into what songs he considers most influential in his life; ‘Quiet Riot got me started

with the banging of my head/Iron maiden, Judas Priest and Slayer taught me how to shred‘ probably not the best example of this ballad but you get the picture. I always have been and always will be a massive fan of Weezer, their simple yet brilliant songs seem to connect with all of their fans on all different levels. Brilliant album 8/10

I picked up ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas‘ this week although i haven’t actually started reading it yet I have a good feeling about it, the blurb is very secretive about the content of the book and because of this i can’t actually tell you anything about it yet! although if you’re really that impatient im sure wikipedia has a lot you can check up on.

I saw the first few episodes of The Family on channel 4 a few weeks ago and its strangely addictive. Its like Big Brother without all the attention seeking tweens. It’s essentially the life of an ordinary family that have been recorded for something like 100 days, Watching it I was able to draw similarities between my own family and the family portrayed on the program, mostly with Tom (above). I find this program interesting both from a psychological and entertainment perspective. Definitely worth a watch.

On Friday I was man enough to get over my fear of The Strangers and return to the cinema. Begrudgingly I was dragged to see Tropic Thunder by my goofball friends. Spoof films for me stopped being funny after Scary Movie and have seemed to getting progressively worse of late. However I found Tropic Thunder mildly entertaining, especially the opening scene spoofing Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Apocalypse Now and Rambo all in one scene. The film is about filming a new war movie, when Tayback (Writer of the book the film is based on) suggests dropping the actors in a real war-like situation leading to hilarious outcomes. Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr put in some pretty epic performances as well, Downey plays a white austrailian actor who has pigment colouration surgery to play the lead black character in the film, while Stiller plays a failing actor who’s biggest hit was playing a Terminator like role 5 times. The film is very well made, with a strong narrative and a hilarious Tom Cruise. 8/10

This one’s quite simple. I saw this band over summer and they were amazing and they are back with an amazing new single, and a pretty good video to accompany it.

…This seems to be the hardest section to write for me constantly and i always thought it’d be easiest! I’m definitely hating writing my personal statement for university. That’s tough.

I certainly don’t think Tropic Thunder deserves 8/10! But each to their own!

Tropic Thunder was awful. It’s a definite 4/10. Only saved by Matthew ‘dude’ McConaughey and Tom Cruise. The apocalypse can’t be far away.
