My Top Five Songs Of 2008 (So Far!)

October 27th, 2008 · 4 Comments · Random

Over the next couple of weeks or so all the staff here at The 405 will endeavor to bring you our their own personal ‘top fives’ of the year. I realise we’re far from reaching the final curtain call of 2008 (do expect a more definite list come January) but until that time comes, heres my (Oliver) top five of the year (so far!)

In no particular order:

‘Kissing The Beehive’ by Wolf Parade (At Mount Zoomer)

At Mount Zoomer is the album that will most likely head my end of year album list come january and I guess it comes as no surprise that I’ve included at least one of the songs from this masterpiece in my chart. Initially ‘California Dreamer’ was my instant highlight but ‘Kissing The Beehive’ just grew and grew and grew. It clocks in at just under 11 minutes but it never bores. It literally has everything in it. It’s epic, it’s got tons of groove and it’s beautiful. What more do you need in a song?

‘I Like What You Say’ by Nada Surf (Lucky)

I find it a real shame when a band can produce an album like this and not be recognised as special, because that’s what this album is. This song reminds me of the great year I’ve had and also about seeing them live for the first time this year. It has a special place in my heart for such immense reasons too.

‘Eyes Wide Terrified’ by Johnny Foreigner (Waited Up Til It Was Light)

The best british releases album of the year? You better believe it. From start to finish this record is perfect. This song was the one that stuck with me the most. “You’re life is a song but not this one” Those lyrics will ring out for a very long time.

‘Dark Horse’ by Bowerbirds (Hymns For A Dark Horse)

This is the album that will be making the process of picking my album of the year all the more difficult. I truly mean that. Everything that’s good about American Folk is in this album. Yes the Fleet Foxes debut is stunning but this for me tops it. I really could have picked any song from this album for this list but when it came down to it ‘Dark Horse’ won it on the basis of it’s darkness.

‘Inní mér syngur vitleysingur’ by Sigur Rós (Með Suð í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust)

If you’ve not heard this album then there’s no doubt in my mind that you’ve been living under, or very near, a giant rock. With this release they took their stardom to a whole new level. Everyone knows this band now and everybody loves them. To be fair it’s about time. This song was my personal favourite in terms of a Sigur Rós live performance and on record it continues to give me goosebumps. Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful.

I’m in the process of constructing my list and have reached the agonizing stage of trying to figure out exactly which JoFo song to put on it. They are too wonderful for words.

I had “your life is a song, but not this one” stuck in my head earlier today and I hadn’t even been listening to ‘JoFo’. It was hard to choose a favourite from that album, likewise Why? but I stand by my choice. Haven’t listened to any of the other songs but will try and check out the Sigur Ros song, I’ve not really listened to any of their stuff since the BaBaTiKiDiDo ep.

Definitely with you on Wolf Parade. ‘At Mount Zoomer’ is a fantastic album - I would struggle to pick my favourite track from it.
