Its been a great year for music so far and as i’m sure there are still a whole bunch of great albums to come out this year I had said I wasn’t going to even attempt a Top 5.
Maybe a Top 10. Maybe a Top 100. A Top 5 is too hard I said, but here I am. My problem with lists like this is that I will want to change it tomorrow. And it was hard enough to single out just five songs so please don’t ask me to put them in any order.
No One Does It Like You by Department Of Eagles (In Ear Park)
The Grizzly Bear folk have a way of producing seemingly timeless pieces of music and this side project doesn’t disappoint in the slightest. This song really stands out for me as it really sums up the year i’m having. I love it because on the surface it sounds so sincere but deep down its desperately cynical.
The Gardener by The Tallest Man On Earth (Shallow Graves)
At the start of this year, two records saved my life, “Shallow Graves” by The Tallest Man On Earth and “For Emma, Forever Ago” by Bon Iver. I listened to them both relentlessly and when I wasn’t listening to them I was humming or singing one of their songs. I have to say that if it wasn’t for the fact that Bon Iver’s record was first released last year that this space would be taken by “Re:Stacks”, but that is the case and I will concede that this song is way more deserving, I just found myself singing “Re:Stacks” a little more often. “The Gardener” is one of the most beautifully epic sounding acoustic songs of all time. A story of love, lies, betrayal, and using a love rival’s dead body to fertilize all the wonderful flowers in your garden.
Keep Quiet by Mimas (The Worries)
If my life was a movie i’d want this song to roll with the credits. Its perfect and thats all i’m going to say about it.
Africa Just Wants To Have Fun by Volcano! (Paperwork)
Volcano’s debut album “Beautiful Seizure” took over my life. I still love listening to it now, so I was understandably excited when they put some songs off their new record on myspace. I was beyond excited after I had heard this song. More accessible yet even more complex. Its beautifully ludicrous in places yet wonderfully serious. This song makes me want to dance around like a moron and throw my television set into the sea. Only Volcano! can do that to me.
Buriedfed by Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson (Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson)
My friend Tom played me this record nice and loud first thing in the morning at this years Latitude festival. Its another reason why I love him so. I laid down on the grass with my hangover, watched the clouds blow past me in the sky and felt a freedom I rarely feel. This song makes me feel lucky to be alive, I must’ve listened to this song two hundred times now and its still getting better each time, I cannot stress enough just how great this song really is.

The Tallest Man on Earth is so great. Have you heard “It Will Follow the Rain” by him? I don’t think it’s on his album, but definitely check it out. I’m pretty sure it’s on his myspace.
Mimas is great.
As for the others, I’m going to go check them out right now.
