ART ROUNDUP (13/09/09)
September 13, 2009,
Written by The 405

This weeks Art Roundup takes a look at horny art, knitted photography, chopped apples, unfathomable oil paintings and some rather unsettling but entirely captivating sculptures. Check it out!
Artist: Frank Stockton
Link:www.frankstockton.com
Firstly, I’m not really sure to whether to think of Frank Stockton’s illustration as provocative or erotic. Which ever way you see it though, I happen to think It’s great. Stockton’s use of blacks, grays and whites in the foreground our boosted by the hot pink background, depicting a pulsating punk rock crowd at a gig. Attention to detail here is simple yet effective. I love the tattoo’s on our young adventurous lovers and check out the studs on the guy opposites jacket! Brilliant!
Artist: Riitta Ikonen
Link:http://riittaikonen.com
Finnish artist Riitta Ikonen makes some pretty impressive costumes for her subjects that incorporate them into their environments in playful and hilarious ways. The experiences of the people wearing Ikonen’s creations as they ride on subways, walk through parks, and stand on the street are as important as the resulting images.
Artist: Alan Warburton
Link:www.alanwarburton.co.uk
Cambridge artist Alan Warburton collaborated with a non-art audience to produce this series of work in which he asked volunteers to use fruit to explain politics: In Caracas, Venezuela, volunteers explained the complex and lively political scene using melons, and in Cambridge, diverse residents used locally picked apples to explain the issues that affect the city.
Artist: Andy Espinoza

This weeks Artists of the Week goes to Andy Espinoza.Andy Espinoza is a representational oil painter who has an enthusiasm for painting the human figure. He enjoys exploring the unique relationship between shapes and values that give each figure its subtle appeal. His paintings are beautifully conceptualised, rich in narrative and technically impressive. Of his work, he says: ‘I see each human figure as a unique challenge. I am coaxed to find the unique relationship between the shapes and tones that give the particular subject its subtle appeal and unrepeatable vitality. My paintings are not photographic representations of my subjects, but rather are my elaboration of what I find to be of value in them’.
Artist: David Mitchell
Link:Not Available
Well this week, for once, I’m well and truly stumped in being able to give you any info on the artist in question. David Mitchell is a hard man to find apparently and I couldn’t find a speck of publicity for any of his work (which wasn’t through a lack of trying). So I’m going to follow suit and not say anything, just to keep the mystery and allure about David Mitchell’s work. The image can speak for itself!
If you would like your art work to be featured in the next Roundup, then send a message to us at - The405arthouse@googlemail.com - PLEASE!!!

I had more of a look at Andy Espinoza - he's fantastic. He portrays emotions in the colours and expressions as well as he presents the human form. Great stuff.

As ever, fantastic art round up man. I particularly the like the fruit composition of Warburton's... very soon I need to be getting in touch with some of the artists you feature to enquire about prints/posters...

Quite often when a song becomes part of a soundtrack, the artist doesn't get a say as to what programme or advert that song goes on, as music is mostly put on a huge database that production companies pay for and choose any song they like from. Can't quite remember what this database is called and I'm not sure if I've explained it correctly either, but the point is I don't think Oberst chose to have his song associated with a bank so that he could make money... maybe. I accept Danny's Lostprophets diss (Oh how I used to LOVE them when the Fake Sound of Progress came out) BUT, Iggy Pop! Iggy pop is the man. It doesn't matter that he's sold out. I'd do the same thing in his shoes. I mean, Iggy Pop, selling car insurance? It's just funny. And that freaky little side kick puppet wasn't actually provided for him by the insurance company. At least I'm assuming it's the same one that was used in the BPA video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6NbMYbX4DU (Just made slightly less disturbing for the general public) [view article]

just to throw a less 'in your face, that ad makes my piss boil' examples... Where do people stand on Journey or anyone involved with the whole Glee-commerce phenomenon...? ...or what about Leonard Cohen...? Whilst he has not sold out in quite the same way, he did sell Hallelujah to Simon Cowell and Alexandra Burke for it to be brutally butchered... though granted he had been robbed by his accountant and was broke so there was some justification... Whilst I was young and idealistic about this, I'm now a lot more realistic. I think that times have changed in the digital age whereby much of music is being acquired for free (legitimately or otherwise). Given this providing soundtracks to ads, movies, eastenders, hollyoaks or whatever is now a realism and it's a way of your favourite artist making ends meet and getting enough exposure for their record company to keep them signed. Hell, even 405 faves Grizzly Bear featured on an ad in the middle of the Superbowl, Telekinesis are the sound of Ford, Conor Oberst in the shape of Bright Eyes is telling us all about Halifax, Death Cab have appeared in the OC, as have Rilo Kiley and Modest Mouse etc etc... the list goes on... Not the most structured arguement really... but the long and short of it is this... What Iggy did was the worst kind of sell out, as his appearance had nothing to do with his music but, let's face it, it's mainly just that the ad was so fucking irritating. [view article]
