Welcome back to The 405 Suggests for our second ever edition, the little corner of the week that we, the people of the 405 and it's majestic forums, recommend you something nice. It could be something old, something new, something huge or completely obscure, it doesn't matter - it's just what's been pushing our buttons this week.
Remember, this is also your chance to get involved in the 405. All you have to do is join our forums, though it's probably best to introduce yourself or something first so we don't just assume you're a wily PR person.
Anyway, sit back, relax, and find something new to love.
The 405 Staff
Katherine: Bonne Idée - Gorgeous, sunny indie-pop. A little retro-sounding, along the likes of Those Dancing Days, Talulah Gosh, The Pastels etc. If you like The Vivian Girls you'll like this. http://www.myspace.com/bonneide
Oliver: AU - Versions EP - I had a pretty lame day so I decided to put AU's forthcoming EP on and BAM, my head was smashed to pieces. It's like a centaur. The head being The Most Serene Republic and the body being a collection of various people that create sonic masterpieces (Dan Deacon/Animal Collective). Beautiful. http://au-au-au.com/
Danny: Tao Te Ching - Lao Tzu (Book) The most influential piece of zen/Taoist writing that exists today, The Tao Te Ching is ostensibly a guide to good State rule although essentially breaks down The Way through a series of beautiful and simple chapters that, as you will see, are instantly applicable to every day life and the pursuit of inner peace and happiness. And it bloody works.
Fern: Screaming Masterpiece - A documentary about the breadth of the Icelandic music scene including Björk, Sigur Rós, Slowblow, Múm, Ghostigital, Amiina and loads more. It has amazing live performances that leave a lump in your throat, and the luscious footage of Iceland's natural landscape makes me want to move there! Click Here for the opening scene.
Rob: Pompeii - Assembly - A beautiful indie rock album stuffed full of twinly guitars and violins - imagine a kind of really mellow version of Cursive's 'The Ugly Organ', or American Football with strings or something. I don't know, that's an awful description of an amazing album because I left it to the last minute to make a pick and settled on this because I'm seeing them tonight! http://www.myspace.com/pompeii

Bella: The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson - This book is the final part of an awesome Swedish crime thriller series called the Millenium trilogy and it came out today. If it's as good as its preceding chapters then it'll be bloody brilliant. http://www.stieglarsson.com/
Once again, some amazing choices, so please have a look for yourselves! See you next time!

Schadenfreude. I think you've pretty much covered it in the last paragraph: when we're down, we search for culture which empathises; when we're up, we search for culture which makes us see the value and worth of our current 'positive' situation. Not everyone though: some people detest dark comedy, cynical people and skeptical views. [view article]
