The buzz started in February this year - Zef culture is above us.
What is zef? So, as Wikipedia sentences âZef is a South African slang term that describes a unique South African style which is modern and trashy and also includes out-of-date, discarded cultural and style elementsâ.
Basically thatâs what Chav culture is for the UK, or the paninaro was for Italy in the 1980s - or what the Jersey Shore dudes are for New York, to make it simple.
And the cause of all this are Die Antwoord (Afrikaans for "The Answer").
Hailing from Cape Town, this rap/electronic crew is formed by Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek and after signing a mega deal with Interscope, are ready to take over the world with their international debut album $O$.
There are not words to describe them. They can do better by themselves in their hilarious videoclips
More than proper Cape Flatsâ inhabitants, though, Waggy Jones & co. are a satirical music-artistic collective (apparently they take care of all the visual side of the project - choreographies and videos included) that, after having achieved a discreet success with the previous name and respective stage persona Max Normal.TV, have reinvented themselves in this Zef parody of themselves.
But the mayhem they cause at their performances is real.
I would dare to say that Die Antwoord are for zef what Goldie Lookin Chain have been for chav culture. Only, they are actually valuable producers and performers and their beats and footages are definitely more sophisticated than their Newportâs equivalent.
âEnter The Ninjaâ is their first single. The lyrics are in between English and Afrikaans.
And they are all pretty dirty - like the erm, elegant, "Jou Ma se Poes in 'n Fishpaste Jar", which literally means "Your Mother's Cunt in a Fishpaste Jar" (on their home label Wat Kyk Jiâs website thereâs a quite eloquent representation of the deep concept ).
Praised by the likes of Pitchfork and Videogum - that compared Waddy Jones to Sasha Baron Cohen and Ninja to Ali G - they just came back from Los Angeles where they recorded $O$, available on streaming from their website.
After having toured the US in their first North American tour (also opening for fellow label-mate M.I.A.) Die Antwoord are currently playing in European festivals and they are going to perform at Led Festival in London on 28th August.
A huge zef hurricane has been forecasted to hit Victoria Park that day, watch out.

Salva has unveiled a track from his forthcoming EP, Yellobone, and it's absolutely brilliant. 'Obsession', which features B. Bravo, is pretty special - and if the rest of the EP is as strong as this, we'll be purchasing it safe in the knowledge that it's the best $10 we've ever spent. [read more]
You could tell us that jj had released a 30 second thrash metal song, and without even hearing it we would be certain that it would be great, so picking today's 'Track Of The Day' was an easy task. [read more]
