Singles Of The Week // 29th August 2012

by Will Tompsett, 29 August 2012

With Notting Hill and the bank holiday now a distant, hazy memory, I'm sure that you'll all be delighted to know that I've decided to celebrate the hilarious prospect of a forthcoming job as a postman with the gift of Sky Sports to myself. Honestly, despite what appears to have been a total waste of an English degree, I'm in a smashing mood this week, and as such I'm delighted to be able to introduce you to Feldspar, by way of a premiere and exclusive download. Mmmm, lovely.

Feldspar – 'The Rest'

In writing this article, I'm very fortunate in being allowed the chance to listen to a lot of bands which I go on to fall in love with, and this week is no different. Feldspar make glorious, lush folk music, building on a rich heritage of storytelling that soundchecks The Pogues to Nick Drake. This week we're proud to offer you both the premiere of this fine video for 'The Rest', along with an exclusive download. It paints a gorgeous, autumnal soundscape, equal parts melancholy and inspiring, that evoke a rich sense of resignation in the face of despair. A band who I truly hope go onto to far larger things, Feldspar combine a genuine sincerity with an aesthetic awareness, rooted in an attention to the finer details of top quality production. Sumptuous.

Polica – 'Wandering Star'

I think that Polica are one of those bands that it is difficult to persuade people about, whether it is in selling them as real innovators, or dismissing them as trying to pass off singing underwater as original - I'm pretty confident that this is not the cause of the vocal effect, but I live in hope. I'm in the camp of the former, and happen to feel that this is a standout track from what was a superb record. I'll leave it up to you to decide though.

Bondax – 'Baby I Got That'

Stupid bloody talent. I'm at the stage in my life where I'm having to slowly accept the fact that I may never play football for England, and Football Manager wonderkids are now four years younger than me. It's not an easy pill to swallow, so please allow me to be incredibly patronising and bitter towards the disgustingly good Bondax. I was first aware of the act after their dynamite AlunaGeorge remix, and they continue to go from strength to strength with 'Baby I Got That', crafting their own niche amongst their dance forefathers. Absolute travesty.

Thanks to Cosmo Jarvis and The Collectable Few, last week's competition saw a frankly ludicrous 6670 votes cast, absolutely rinsing the previous best for the article, and taking huge advantage of the publicity garnered through Facebook, so cheers very much for that. After a massively competitive start to the contest, and a very fun argument breaking out in the Comments section, Cosmo Jarvis came out on top with 61.44% of the vote. Credit is due to The Collectable Few though, who s... (continued) [read more]
