Supersonic Festival 2012 // The 405 Preview
There’s a multitude of reasons why music and art fans travel from across the world to Birmingham’s oldest quarter for Supersonic each year; adventures in sound and vision delivered by some of the most exciting and imaginative artists performing and practicing only just begins to describe this live and electrifying festival experience.
Using the Custard Factory’s complex of vast spaces, arches and rooms and nearby venues as a focal point for the three-day programme of contemporary music, art, performance and film, the forces behind Supersonic – city promoters Capsule – are once again about to kick boundaries and expectations into the dust, marking ten years of the festival with another undefinable and incomparable line-up.
Opening with the motorik-Balearic sounds of Birmingham duo Free School, the weekend offers up distorted kitschtronica in the shape of Modified Toy Orchestra, raw, savage and wild slabs of noise from artists and bands like JK Flesh and Doomsday Student, the enigmatic and subversive art-terrorism of Hype Williams, twisted avant-jazz soundscapes created by guitarist Stian Westerhus and killer dancehall-electro from The Bug. The line-up is unashamedly bold and creative, out to engage and surprise in equal measures.
In addition, there are chances to take part in panel discussions featuring Crass co-founder, writer and performer Penny Rimbaud and sound artist Lucas Abela amongst others, a remote control car ‘vinyl rally’ audio-visual experiment, take in short films from KINO 10 and mixed media from Network Awesome, check out zine workshops and participate in ‘Wild Man’ life drawing classes amid an eye-opening selection of extra-sensory experiences.
Past festival headliners include Swans, Sunn O))), Caribou, Battles, Fuck Buttons, Luke Vibert, Efterklang, LCD Soundsystem and Napalm Death – proof, if you needed it, that Supersonic is one place you are guaranteed to discover future music and art in the most unlikely of settings.
Expect the grid in Birmingham to blow.
