Earlier this year I included
Until The Sun Dies (Part 2), from
Crystal Antlers self titled EP
as my 'top five songs of the year, so far' and in a similar vein I would like to encourage you to keep your eyes and ears open for them in the new year.
Hailing from sun-kissed California
Crystal Antlers are five young men who make blissed out psychedelic rock with plenty of grooves, ass shaking bass lines and huge riffs-a-plenty. Their songs cresting on waves of swirling guitars, kaleidoscopic organ and big beat drumming.
They released their first EP in June this year, produced by Ikey Owens, keyboardist in
The Mars Volta, and it has to be one of my favorite discoveries of the year, it's a fresh and re-invigorating take on the genre while still holding onto the conventions that give it such an inventive and interesting sound. It also allows you to rock out with some of the more fist-pumping interludes.
They will be coming to these shores in January and playing a handful of dates in England, including The Luminaire, one of London's best venues for bands like this. I witnessed
Comets On Fire, who are
Crystal Antlers' compatriots, and like minded purveyors of psychadelic rock, there a few months ago and it was one of the best gigs I have ever been to, I am expecting similarly great things from
Crystal Antlers when they arrive.
