    Introducing #142 School Knights

    by Ayesha Linton-Whittle

Located in the middle of North America, School Knights purloin the influences that surround them. Creating a fusion of lo-fi streaked Metal and Punk which is prominent in their track ‘Lunch Money’, the band hold a variety of influences including Devo, Miracle Chosuke and Women. “It really started as me trying to write death metal” explains their lead singer, Michael Stein (not to be confused with the banjo-led, country musician) “but alas I don’t really know what death... Introducing #117 Lost Dawn

    by Ayesha Linton-Whittle

The cow-bell infused drum beat which commences Lost Dawn’s second EP, corresponding to their debut EP, initiates the quickly matured sound of the Cornwall-based blues band. Their songs are rawer, their riffs are louder and they seem to have found exactly where they are heading musically. When compared to The Black Keys most recent album, Brothers, the difference is barely distinguishable. Except for the fact that Keep It Cool consists of only four tracks and they lack the Ame... Introducing #95 Cloud Nothings

    by Ayesha Linton-Whittle

I have searched high and low for a good English unsigned band. I have ventured through hundreds of band MySpace pages, flicked through endless magazine and newspaper pages and asked plenty of music obsessed friends to recommend some English bands. Yet I have found none. America has somewhat captured all worthwhile music, or perhaps I am just looking in all the wrong places. Consequently, this Introducing feature is about yet another incredible American band. When I first stumbl... (continued) [read more]

    Introducing #92 Dirty Girls

    by Ayesha Linton-Whittle

Dirty Girls are yet another band to have risen up from the American lo-fi scene along with better-known bands such as Real Estate and Women. They are made up of four men and come from Atlanta. Their music, inevitably, consists of simple drum beats; riffs that could have easily been influenced by The Beach Boys and plenty of reverb on the vocals. So much in fact that the vocals are almost undistinguishable- everything that makes a brilliant lo-fi band. I asked Dirty Girls what t... (continued) [read more]

    Introducing #91 Gray Goods

    by Ayesha Linton-Whittle

Gray Goods are a band from Brooklyn, which is evident when compared to the likes of other Brooklyn based acts such as Browns and Beach Fossils. The lead singer, Ryan Brown’s voice is almost undistinguishable to the soft pack’s slurred vocals. However, the strung-out words contradict the upbeat melodies, portraying two sides of the duo’s musical minds. My personal favourite on their EP is ‘Fallen’. Commencing with a perfect array of chords, soon to be accompanied by th... (continued) [read more]

    Introducing #90 Aged Yummy

    by Ayesha Linton-Whittle

When I asked Aged Yummy if they could send us over a song for a 405 feature, they were so pleased that they sent us two. Coincidently, they sent my two favourite tracks from their debut album Pacific Reactions which you can download for free (here). Aged Yummy are currently living in Huddersfield and their vocals are almost undistinguishable when compared to fellow neighbours, Disconcerts. However, the catchy riffs and upbeat, unpredictable melodies stray away from Disconcerts... (continued) [read more]
