    by Ryan Barham

The music scene around Surrey and Hampshire is currently thriving with the likes of Sissy And The Blisters and Foe drawing plaudits from all over the place. A diverse and communal spirit encompasses throughout all the local bands (see the nods to each other in the Hold Your Horse Is and Our Lost Infantry videos *), and to celebrate this, the guys behind the local Rage fanzine, Songs Of Rage, have brought together ten of the finest bands from the area for a free compilation album, ... by Ryan Barham

With festival season fast approaching, we thought we’d take a look at some of the kind of people and situations you can expect to encounter whilst trying to watch your favourite bands. After the mad rush to get a festival ticket, you’re both shocked and disappointed to see that they’re going for less than face value on ebay in the week leading up to the event. Introducing #151 Tribes

    by Ryan Barham

With a strong anti-internet stance at first, Camden’s Tribes built up their reputation by word-of-mouth. There’s still not too much about them online but a quick Google search finds them being touted by both the NME and the Guardian as one of their tips for 2011. They’ve already signed to Island and their support slot with Mystery Jets ended up with Blaine Harrison asking if he could cover one of their songs. They’ve also played with one of their favourite bands, the Pixie... (continued) [read more]

  • Introducing #150 Whirl

    Introducing #150 Whirl

    by Ryan Barham

San Francisco’s Whirl shoegazing sound sits somewhere between My Bloody Valentine and Ride, but with a much more elite feel that has long evolved from their peers. Their debut EP ‘Distressor’ comes drenched in loud feedback, and the band’s melodic elements sometimes get lost, but isn’t that the point? Standout track ‘Leave’ has the grungey elements of The Joy Formidable but if they’d listened to Slowdive records, as does the equally exhilarating ‘Ghost’. The co... (continued) [read more]

  • Introducing #138 Adam Barnes

    Introducing #138 Adam Barnes

    by Ryan Barham

Oxford-based singer songwriter Adam Barnes has one of those voices that just demands your attention. Indeed, the opening 20 seconds of his song ‘Lighthouse’ showcase this with not an instrument in sight, before a full band add another level to a song that has already grabbed you. All his songs have a bigger sound then you’d imagine, especially with the piano often taking centre stage. Adam says he is influenced by both Americana and folk artists, although more contemporary a... (continued) [read more]
