Liverpool Sound City // The 405 Review

Liverpool Sound City celebrated its fifth outing with a list of bands and events that was so large it seemed faintly ridiculous - around 350 acts over 3 days, along with several respectable music-industry-orientated conferences and often utilising venues that didn't actually exist until a few days before the festival. Not forgetting a football tournament and an early-bird price of £20 for the whole festival - not bad for a 5 year old. [read more]

In February and March We Aeronauts toured with Cat Matador to promote their respective new CDs. This diary was kept by We Aeronauts’ drummer, Jeremy. The ‘Chalon Valley’ EP is out late May on Brainlove Records. Thursday 24th February Cat Matador EP Launch, The Cellar, Oxford I love King of Cats. The venue barely constitutes busy yet, but as people drift in there’s a high chance they’d find Max laying on the venue floor playing the ukulele to the ceiling. The rest ... (continued) [read more]

EL CHUCO Y QUE I was in El Paso, Texas, a small town only a few thousand miles north of Mexico City, and a few million from New York, when things got a little out of hand. James Apollo and the Sweet Unknown were playing a joint called the Wherehouse (which was an apt description) in what looked like the outskirts of El Paso, but really, all of El Paso looks like the outskirts of El Paso. The sidewalks are made of old sheet metal and the populace is mostly tumbleweeds. But no... (continued) [read more]

We awoke early on Sunday 6th March and all made our way groggily to Heathrow airport to catch a flight to NYC. Needless to say there was much excitement in the air and the flights went on too long. We headed to the house in Brooklyn that we were renting, taking in the sights of NY en route. The band shared one room for five days – very cosy. Whilst in NY we played three great shows: at Cake Shop, Mercury Lounge and Pianos. This was a perfect way to prepare for SXSW. Time off ... Edinburgh / Sneaky Pete’s – 11th February It’s a tight squeeze in the car, in view of the fact that Andrew is joining us on stage tonight. He has a moustache and wears neck scarves; I am very excited. Customary lateness ensues, but we are greeted with a warm welcome when we arrive at the venue. A quick sound check before we wander off to find some grub. I order some haddock chowder; it is heaven. We return in time to catch Finn Le Marinel and I Build Collapsible Mountain... Bristol Kit: In the week leading up to the tour I’ve been suffering from nightmares every night. One involving a pygmy bull intent on attacking me and another where my father is flying a doomed spaceship controlled only by writing a song in Cubase. The chorus hook wasn’t big enough so I started to weep uncontrollably. Anyway, I’m hoping sleeping on floors for the next 10 days will cure me. We’ll see. Jody: On the way down to the West country we’re familiarising ou... (continued) [read more]

So at some point last October we thought it would be a good idea to go out on the road in December to whore Bronto round Scotland. The weather couldn't be mental two years running. That would just be stupid. 9th December - Inverness, Madhatters Our first gig of the tour was Inverness which is Niall's hometown and the scene of one of our best gigs earlier on in the year at GoNorth 2010. The few days before the nation was in mild chaos due to the snow and we weren't even sure if... (continued) [read more]
